About the Conference
The annual REECAS (now CEREAS) Northwest conference is the official northwest regional conference of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES). Established in 1994, CEREAS Northwest welcomes students, faculty, independent scholars, and language educators from the Pacific Northwest and beyond, with participant and partner universities from across the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. The interdisciplinary conference is organized by the University of Washington’s Ellison Center / Center for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies, Jackson School of International Studies.
Featured Speakers
Michael Kimmage is the director of the Kennan Institute, an independent think tank in Washington, DC. From 2014 to 2016, he served on the Secretary’s Policy Planning Staff, where he held the Russia/Ukraine portfolio. He is the author of, among other books: The Conservative Turn: Lionel Trilling, Whittaker Chambers and the Lessons of Anti-Communism (Harvard University Press, 2009); The Abandonment of the West: The History of an Idea in American Foreign Policy (Basic Books, 2020); and Collisions: The Origins of the War in Ukraine and the New Global Instability (Oxford University Press, 2024; out in paperback in 2026). Kimmage will be delivering a talk at CEREAS NW 2027 on Studying the War in Ukraine. The talk will address three problems in the study of the war in Ukraine and especially in the study of its origins. These problems are: the question of chronology, of when to begin arguments and narratives; the question a national versus a transnational focus; and the question of sources, when there is so much that we do not (yet) know. This talk will conclude with some recommendations of students and scholars who intend to study the war in Ukraine.
Dr. Kristi Raik is the Director of the International Centre for Defence and Security in Tallinn, Estonia, since January 1, 2025. She is also an Adjunct Professor of International Relations at the University of Turku. She has previously served as the Deputy Director of ICDS, Director of the Estonian Foreign Policy Institute at the ICDS, Senior Research Fellow at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs and official at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union. Her main areas of expertise are European security, strategic competition in Eastern Europe, EU foreign and security policy, and foreign and security policies of the Baltic states and Finland. She has published in high-ranking academic journals (e.g. Geopolitics, European Security, Cooperation and Conflict) and media outlets (incl. Foreign Policy). She is a frequent commentator in the international media and has provided expert contributions to the Estonian, Finnish, EU and NATO institutions. Kristi has a PhD from the University of Turku. Dr Raik will be delivering a talk at CEREAS NW 2027 on Defending Democracy.
